From the Dragon Award–nominated author of Astra Academy: One young woman leads a ragtag band of survivors across a fractured, post-alien-invasion America.

Hacker Kita Yamasaki would do anything to escape the post-apocalyptic landscape that was the result of the Forever Winter. But for a normal person, the only options are the war-hungry nation-state of Ex Cathedra or the isolationist United California. Fortunately, Kita is anything but normal.

When she finds a faded brochure for the BC Oasis—an underground greenhouse capable of sheltering a quarter million people—she jumps at the opportunity, even going so far as to steal a fission battery the oasis requires to operate at full capacity. There’s just one problem . . . The battery belongs to the ruthless judges of Ex Cathedra.

Now Kita finds herself the target of a deadly chase. In her race to safety, she picks up three fellow travelers: Dallas; his mute daughter, Crouton; and Bishop, a junk hunter. But will they betray her and take the battery for themselves? Is one of them a member of the cultist Iron-Blooded who worship the few remaining alien invaders scattered across Earth’s wasteland?

Faced with certain death if they’re caught by the judges’ power-armored soldiers, Kita must put aside her suspicions and make a headlong dash for sanctuary—and the promise of a new life.

“A fantastic read . . . Kita is so much more than a hacker, and the world she moves through isn’t just lethal—it feels uncomfortably familiar, and incredibly close.” —Terry Maggert, coauthor of the Backyard Starship series

The future is governed through a genetic hierarchy—superhumans at the top, humans and defects at the bottom.

Clevon Demarco, a genetically modified human, has a cocksure attitude and the combat skills to back it up. With his unparalleled skills, he makes his living as a ruthless gunrunner on a shady space station near the edges of the quadrant. Stronger, faster, and wittier than most sad sacks, no one even comes close to Demarco’s abilities—until he crosses paths with the captain of the notorious Star Marque, Endellion Voight.

Captain Voight arrests Demarco and offers him a choice: go to a prison planet for his crimes, or join her starship, the Star Marque, working as mercenaries for the superhumans. But she didn’t pick him at random. She has a plan to become a planet governor; a title no human has held since the superhumans won the war. It doesn’t matter the cost—assassinations, extortion, blackmail—she’s determined to claw her way to the top.

  3. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its completely different take on starship crewing and law enforcement. it is an approach that I have never seen before. I also enjoyed all the twists and turns in the story and its Machiavellian plots. While a good portion of the story is dedicated to the genetic, and cybernetic modification of humans; I didn’t think that was the most important part of the story. I found its portrayal of good vs. evil very interesting; it asks the age-old question can good people perform evil deeds, and can evil people perform good deeds? The ending will definitely take lots of readers by surprise, I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book when it is published.
I am eagerly awaiting my Newsletter.

  6. Hello Shami,

I’ve left a review of Plague Arcanist on Amazon, but I have to say that I cannot wait for World Serpent Arcanist and am tortured by having to. I will avoid any major details or spoilers, but I have to say that even though I predicted the ending when you-know-who made THAT choice, it didn’t do a thing to stop me feeling 1000% satisfied with how it went down.

I will say that I have absolutely no ideas about Volke’s fate or future, but I will say that since Knightmare Arcanist I’ve wanted Volke to be the one to bond that world serpent, and while I hope will all my heart it happens, your ability for storytelling has satisfied me so much that even if it doesn’t I have no doubt I’ll love whatever you choose to do.

I eagerly await Book 5, and pray you choose to release it with less time than between Coliseum Arcanist and Plague Arcanist. I can’t wait!

    1. I’m obsessed with Frith Chronicles. It is easily one of the best series I’ve read even though it is not yet complete. You are just so articulate and expresses words in a manner that is captivating and really holds attention. I also like to commend that you chose to stay on Volke’s perspective. I always find it annoying when in other stories it constantly shifts, sometimes it makes me feel that the part of the protagonist is a fish in the sea.

  13. I don’t even know where to begin with how amazing your Frith Chronicles Series is. It’s just past midnight; I just finished Coliseum Arcanist and, I don’t know what’s more heart breaking between the ending or the fact that I don’t have Plague Arcanist to sate my soul’s desire. The way you write is so eloquent and descriptive that the world you’ve created is alive in my mind. I would be the first in line to see the movie or buy the game. Not only that but your conceptual choices and decisions you’ve made about the characters and the happenings in the book are super clever. You’re a literary genius. I don’t know if you watch anime, but Coliseum Arcanist had my heart in a chokehold like mixing the beautifuly, light-hearted, and jovial feelings of Konosuba, with the utter despair of the first season of Attack on Titan. Your work on the Frith Chronicles is legendary and could rival the great lore of LoTR and Eragon, but is energetic enough that you feel like you’re right there with the characters, instead of feeling like you’re strapped into a seat watching other people ride a rollercoaster for you. I must admit that I’m upset at you in a way that only people familiar George R.R. Martin’s work are (I hope you understand cause I don’t want to spoil for others (Coliseum Ch54)). But I do understand that heartbreak is always painful. I love this series and will always cherish it forever and ever. Btw I would really love some fan merch, like if you made Theasin Venrover’s book into a real thing but with lots of pictures of all the eldrin! And also I’d love to have a map of the world so I could look at it while reading the books (cause I’ll probably read them once a year) and reference where all the different locations are. And of course I haven’t even started Plague Arcanist yet, but I seriously can’t wait til all the next ones come out. I don’t know if you’ve struggled with real depression, regardless of the severety, and I don’t usually like to be so cliche but you’re books are really helping me recently. Whenever I start to feel down again your books with be one of the first things I reach out for. Thank you so much for giving joy to my life in the form of your books. Words haven’t been invented yet to describe my admiration for you as an author!

    1. Justin, I’m super humbled by your comment. I sometimes get awkward when people compliment my work, but in this instance, I’m just so very glad it helped you though a rough time in your life. I’ve gone through some bouts of depression, and I was extremely thankful to find things to bring me out of it, so I understand where you’re coming from. I hope you enjoy the 4th book (and the rest of the series!). Thank you so much for comment! It encourages me to write more and more often! ❤

  14. Just wanted to say I love the Frith Chronicles Series. Every book was better than the last and by book 3 I was wondering how you were going to top it but you didn’t disappoint. There is something about the way you write that had me literally unable to stop reading. I hope book 5 comes out this year. Wish you lots more success.

    1. Hello there! Sorry for the delays response! So much happening lately, lol

And no! World Serpent is book 5 of 7, so I hope you’re excited for at least two more novels in the series (as well as a spin off series in the works and a short story collection!)

      1. How big is the chance they will all be in Grandmaster Arcanist? Also, will we be getting more Volke and Evianna time?

  18. Hello! I am absolutely in love with the Knightmare Arcanist and cannot wait to dive into the next book of the series. How does the academy Arcanist fit into it? Will I learn more simply by reading more of the books? I cant ship them fast enough to keep up with the pace I want to read at! Your work brings me both back to my childhood stories but also sitting very grounded in my mid-twenties life.

    1. Hello there! I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying the novels. That makes my whole day! As for your question: Academy Arcanist is a spin-off series set in an academy. Knightmare Arcanist (and the rest of the Frith Chronicles) take place in a different location/setting. Hopefully that helps!

      1. Just wanted to learn how many books would the Academy Archanist series have? I am in love with the characters. Gray and Sorin both remind me of Volke but are still different in manu ways! This series holds so much promise! At first, I thought this book series would be like Boruto, a really bad spin-off of a really great anime but now I felt ashamed I felt this way. Great book tbh.

  19. Genuinely curious, at such a young age I finish your books in about five hours, but other than that I was wondering if you would be making an eighth book in the Firth Chronicles because I hate being left on cliffhangers, so I would really appreciate an eighth book, keep up the excellent writing Shami! :3

  25. Here’s an idea for an eldrin (I might make more when i get ideas)

1: Unsure on a name T-T, (I was thinking timekeeper but it sounds like I just took relickeeper and replaced one word)

Description: An eldrin which takes the form of an animal made of cracked, aged sandstone (like a cat, dog or even a magical creature)

Evocation: strong hallucinations that put a person in a trance. This person will ‘see’ their surroundings have time reversed (like a video!). Useful for uncovering mysteries lost to time (such as an ancient civilisation, or a village long destroyed.). This person is effectively disabled until the trance ends.

Manipulation: Reversal and slowdown of time. This will only work for up to 5 minutes without a true form, and only effects a small area around the arcanist.

Augmentation: reverses time for objects affected; so a tree may turn into a sapling and then into a seed. Usage on something dead (like a human) will work, but only leaves a husk unable to communicate or move since the soul has passed into the abyssal hells.

Aura: Decay aura. Around the user, things will start to crumble to dust. Eldrin are less affected but will become younger and less developed (so if a knightmare was affected, some parts of its armour would start to shatter and crumble, weakening it).

    Tier: 3

Passive abilities: The ability to tell the age and history of anything (alive or dead or inanimate) at a glance.

Creation by Fable: A particularly old find at an excavation site (over 10 000 years old) will cause this creature to spawn nearby.

Trial Of Worth: Digging and finding a fossil as old or older than 500 years old.

True form requirements: Virtue by displaying an undying greed for uncovering mysteries. This will cause the cracks on the eldrin to widen and break open to only show the bones of the animal.

    True form extras :3

Duration of effects increased. Potency of effects increased. The arcanist gains the ability to speed up time slightly. Dust from an aura now causes lethargy and dizziness.
